Aqua Leisure Centre
The new Leisure Centre has been built at a cost of 20.5 million euro of which 4 million came from the Department of Environment and Local Government, another 4 million from the Department of Art,Sport and Tourism. The balance is being funded by Dublin City Council and Ballymun Regeneration Ltd.
The new Leisure Centre opened in late June 2005. The centre is located on the Main Street, opposite the Civic Offices.
The Manager of the Centre Mr. George Mullis would welcome hearing the views and ideas of persons that have used the facility. To illustrate how local opinion is heeded, he says that in the short time that the Leisure Centre is in operation, he has amended the rule that children under the age of twelve years must be accompanied in the pool by an adult during the total swim period.
The situation now is that should the adult prefer to watch the child’s progress from the viewing area, this would be acceptable. However, for obvious health and safety reasons, children less than twelve years old must be accompanied to the Centre, be in visual range during the swim period and accompanied out of the Centre by an adult.
For the month of July the Centre will be open for hourly swimming sessions during the hours 12 noon to 4pm.
Aerobics and Gym Facilities
The centre contains yoga and palates studio, separate spinning and aerobic studios, as well as a very large fully fitted out gym with TV screens.
- 24 treadmills
- 16 bikes
- 16 cross trainers each with their own televisions. This way you can exercise and watch your favorite TV programme at the same time.
In relation to gymnasium activities equipment being installed in the Centre, there will be:
Swimming Pools and Children's Play Area
There are two swimming pools within the centre. The dimensions of the first pool are 8 metres x 25 metres, and alongside is another pool of the same length. The second pool is divided into two sections. One section caters for toddlers, and goes from 6 inches to 1 foot in depth. At the shallow end there is an area with play equipment. There are also two water slides with flumes (tubes)for the children. The slides are two different heights, and these exit into a separate pool. At the other end of this pool, there is a section where children can learn to swim. This area is 5 metres wide and 7 and a half metres long. There is also a section of the pool which has a water jet system in place. The pool also has a viewing area.
Steam and Sauna Facilities
Steam and Sauna Facilities are also provided in the centre.
Management of the Centre
Crunch Fitness has been selected to provide leisure management services for the Ballymun Centre.
Crunch have a wide level of experience, and currently operate centres in UCD, the Pavillion in Dun Laoghaire, Westmanstowm in Lucan, and they are also currently building a centre on the old Virgin Mega Store on Aston Quay.
Cost of Using the Centre
This centre was built for the community of Ballymun, and will specifically target residents of Ballymun. It will provide both a "Pay by Visit" whereby people pay each time they use the centre, or there is an option for availing of an annual membership. The annual membership will be set at a more economic price than the pay per visit option. This option is suitable for people who want to use the centre more than once a week. It will be possible to pay the membership fee on a monthly basis, and there will be both family and individual memberships. When costs have been agreed, we will provide an update on the website, and also in our monthly newsletter, The Ballymun Update.
Leisure Centre Programmes of Activities
The new town centre complex will have a very extensive and busy programme of activities for children, teenagers and adults.
