Co-operative Housing

In 2000, the Board of Ballymun Housing Task Force (now Ballymun Neighbourhood Council)decided to assess the willingness of young Ballymun persons to become involved in forming local housing co-operatives. Arising from this decision, an information newsletter was distributted within the Ballymun Estate and criterion were laid down for the recognition of bona-fide co-operatives.
Although the response was very positive, it took 18 months to develop the first Task Force initiated co-op (New Horizon) to a level whereby they could be offered land to build 28 dwellings.
In the meantime, a group of community workers had already formed an affordable housing co-operative called Tigh Meitheal and they had been allocated land to build 22 homes.
Several years later however, those dwellings are built and by all accounts the residents are really happy with their homes.
